OCA lamination and glass changing iPhone screens

By Fixera

A glass changed iPhone screen is the original Apple panel and original flex with only the broken front glass removed and new glass bonded back on with fresh OCA, relaminated under vacuum, heat and pressure. The panel that shows the image, the touch layer and the flex are the parts Apple built. Fixera, the trade name of Fonora OU in Tartu, Estonia, refurbishes original iPhone displays this way and sells them to EU repair shops, and buys broken original iPhone and Samsung Galaxy screens back for refurbishing.

What does glass changed mean on an iPhone screen?

Glass changed means only the outer cover glass was replaced, and everything under it stayed original. On an OLED iPhone the display is a stack: cover glass on top, then the OCA adhesive layer, then the original OLED panel and its flex underneath. When a phone is dropped and the glass cracks but the image is still clean and touch still works across the whole surface, the panel itself is fine. The fault lives in the top layer only.

That is the whole case for glass changing. You keep the expensive, hard to source original panel and replace the cheap layer that broke. The result is an original panel display at a lower price than a service pack, with none of the compromises of an aftermarket copy. It is a different rung from touch and flex replaced, where the digitizer and flex are swapped too.

How is a cracked original panel refurbished?

The panel is refurbished by stripping the broken glass and OCA, cleaning the panel, laying fresh OCA and new glass, then relaminating the stack under vacuum, heat and pressure. It is a bench process with a defined order, and each step has to be clean or the unit fails later.

StepWhat happensWhy it matters
SplitHeat softens the old adhesive and the cracked glass lifts off the panelToo much heat or force cracks the panel and turns a repairable unit into a reject
CleanOld OCA is removed and the panel face is cleaned to optically clearAny residue or dust trapped under the new glass shows as a mark or a bubble
Lay OCAFresh OCA is applied to the panel or the new glassThe adhesive is what bonds the glass to the panel with no air gap
LaminateNew glass is pressed onto the panel under vacuum, heat and pressureVacuum pulls the air out so the bond is gap free across the whole face
Debubble and cureTrapped micro bubbles are driven out under pressure, then the OCA curesSkipped, the bubbles surface days later as blotches under the glass

The panel never leaves the loop. The image stays the original OLED, the touch layer stays original, the flex stays original. Only the glass and the adhesive holding it are new. That is why a glass changed unit still reads as an original Apple display on the counter and behaves like one.

Why does lamination quality decide the result?

Lamination decides the result because the bond between glass and panel is the part a technician sees and touches every day, and a weak bond shows up as bubbles, edge lift or dust marks. A perfect original panel with a bad relam is a return. The panel can be flawless and the unit still fails on the bench because the glass is lifting at a corner or a bubble crept in near the earpiece.

Good lamination is measured in what does not happen. No bubbles at day one and none surfacing at day ten. No dust specks under the glass. Glass flush to the frame with the correct bezel, not proud or sunk. Edges fully bonded so nothing peels when the phone flexes in a pocket. This is why relam quality, not the panel alone, separates a display you can fit without a second thought from one that costs you a return, the part and double the labour. The panels Fixera sells to the shop are bench tested and touch checked before they ship for exactly this reason.

Is the panel still original after a glass change?

Yes. A glass change replaces the cover glass and the OCA only, so the OLED panel, the touch layer and the flex are the ones Apple manufactured. Nothing about the image, the color or the touch behaviour is aftermarket. This is the line that matters to a repair shop: an original panel with new glass is not a copy panel. Soft OLED, hard OLED and incell copies replace the panel itself. A glass change keeps it.

One honest note on the software side. Because the panel was serviced outside Apple, iOS may log the display under Parts and Service History as not verified as a genuine Apple part. That is iOS bookkeeping about who did the work, not a defect and not a comment on the panel origin. The panel is genuine. True Tone and auto brightness carry across because the original flex and its display data stay with the panel through the glass change.

What can a glass change not fix?

A glass change cannot fix a fault that lives in the panel, only one that lives in the glass. If the drop that cracked the glass also killed the panel, no relam brings it back. This is the line between a unit that gets refurbished and one that gets rejected or graded down.

  • A green line, a bright line or a color band is a dead panel fault. Relam does nothing for it.
  • A corner shadow, a blotch or burn in is in the OLED itself, not the glass.
  • Dead touch across an area is a digitizer or panel fault, outside a glass change.
  • A fully black or dead image is a reject, not a candidate.

This is where the buyback side comes in. When you sell broken screens for refurbishing, the ones with clean images under cracked glass are worth the most, because they are the glass change candidates. A panel with a line still shows an image and takes touch, so it still pays, lower down the ladder. FAQ

Is a glass changed screen as good as a genuine Apple screen?

The panel is the same original Apple panel, so the image, color and touch match. The only new parts are the cover glass and the OCA under it. A clean relam performs like an original display. A bad relam shows bubbles or edge lift, which is why lamination quality is the thing to judge, not the panel origin.

Does True Tone work after a glass change?

Yes. A glass change keeps the original panel and its original flex, and True Tone data lives with that flex, so True Tone and auto brightness carry across without a chip transfer. Nothing about the light sensing hardware is touched during a glass change.

Why is a glass changed screen cheaper than a service pack?

Because only the glass and adhesive are new and the costly original panel is reused rather than bought fresh. A sealed service pack is a full new original assembly. A glass change reclaims a working original panel from a screen that would otherwise be scrap, which is what keeps the price down while keeping the panel genuine.

How long is the warranty on a Fixera refurbished screen?

Every refurbished original display carries a 90 day warranty, tested per unit before it ships. If a unit fails inside warranty, it is replaced through RMA. Prices are quoted ex VAT.
