What is a soft OLED screen?

A soft OLED is an aftermarket panel built on a flexible polyimide substrate, the same broad construction as the factory display, which is why it comes closest to original. Peak brightness and color land near the real panel, touch is usually accurate, and the black border matches most models. It is the priciest aftermarket tier and the one worth buying if you are buying copy at all.

The catches are consistency and pairing. Batch-to-batch color can drift, long-term burn-in behavior is unproven against Apple's, and True Tone only survives if the panel ships with a tag-on flex or you do a chip transfer. Without that IC, auto-brightness and True Tone stay dead.

What is a hard OLED screen?

A hard OLED is an aftermarket panel bonded to a rigid glass substrate instead of a flexible one, which makes it cheaper and more fragile. It cracks more readily during install and on the customer's next knock, and on many models the printed black border sits wider than stock, so a sharp eye spots it on the counter. Peak brightness runs under original and ghost touch complaints climb on the cheaper stock.

Blacks are still true black because it is OLED, so it reads better than incell on an OLED phone. But between the brittleness, the bezel and the higher return rate, hard OLED is the tier that quietly costs you in RMA labor.

What is an incell screen, and when is it fine?

Incell is an LCD with the touch layer built into the display stack, and it carries a backlight because every LCD needs one. On an iPhone that originally shipped with LCD, such as the 11, XR, SE and the older 6 through 8 lines, incell is a reasonable like-for-like part: bright, physically tough, cheap, and touch is usually solid.

On any OLED iPhone, incell is a downgrade you can see. Blacks go gray, contrast and viewing angles drop, the panel is thicker, and True Tone rarely works without programming. It is the budget floor for a customer who wants the lights back on and does not care about picture quality.

Where do original and refurbished-original panels sit?

Original and refurbished-original panels sit above the entire aftermarket ladder because the OLED and flex are genuine Apple. A pulled original matches the factory display exactly, since it is the factory display, cosmetically graded A to C. A refurbished-original keeps the original panel and flex and swaps only the cracked cover glass, relaminated with new OCA, so brightness, color, bezel and touch stay native and True Tone rides on the original flex.

For a shop that lives or dies on return rate, that is the point. No ghost-touch lottery, no wider border, no True Tone workaround. You pay more per unit than hard OLED or incell and you claw it back in DOAs you never process.

Which screens show the genuine-part warning?

Every non-factory display can trigger the genuine-part notice, including original panels moved between phones, because the warning is about factory pairing to that exact handset, not about panel origin. iOS logs it under Settings, General, About, Parts and Service History, and after the swap it reads "Unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple display."

Two things are worth saying straight to a customer. On aftermarket, the notice is permanent and the panel is not Apple. On a genuine or refurbished-original panel that was not serialized to this board, the same notice can appear even though the OLED is real Apple glass and performs identically; it is iOS bookkeeping, not a defect. Anyone who claims they can clear that warning on a copy panel is guessing.
